Biography
Born in Los Angeles in 1944, Shinzen Young studied Asian languages at UCLA and Buddhist Studies at the University of Wisconsin. He was ordained as a Shingon monk at Mount Kōya, Japan in 1970, receiving the name Shinzen.
He synthesizes Burmese Vipassana, Japanese Zen, and comparative mysticism into Unified Mindfulness, taught worldwide and used in neuroscience research. He collaborates with institutions studying the scientific benefits of contemplative practice.
